LOCATED IN THE HEART OF ACADIANA, Bienvenue House provides the perfect place to launch day excursions into the heart of Cajun country.  You can start with a walking tour of  St. Martinville  with the Evangeline Oak and historic downtown area only blocks away.

Along  Bayou Teche and within short driving distances are unique pockets of Cajun culture stretching across St. Martin Parish and down to New Iberia , a short 15 miles away.

In Breaux Bridge, only 10 minutes away,  you can tour historic grave sites, eat an elegant dinner or just have a break at Cafe des Amis  or listen to live cajun music at Mulate's. Lafayette also offers a variety of great dining experiences, but one couldn't do better than to start at Randol's.

And there is Avery Island, a wildlife sanctuary with a nature walk that gets you up close and personal with migrating species and even a few alligators and home of the world-famous McIllhenny  Tabasco hot sauce.

photo by Phil Ward Ask Leslie about getting to one of the most beautiful and interesting water areas in the world -- Lake Martin.
Only 10 minutes up the road, it features some of the more beautiful swamp scenes in the area. Visitors can drive the perimeter of the lake and view alligators, nutria, and more than a dozen variety of nesting birds from early spring until late September.

Then there is the Atchafalaya Basin where dozens of landings offer swamp tours and boat rentals into the largest fresh water basin in the world.

And the cajun expression "lassier les bon temp roulez" or 'let the good times roll is a reality exercised in the dozens of   festivals in the area. From Lafayette's Festival L'Acadiane in the fall and the Festival International de Louisiane in the spring and the traditional Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival  to the St. Martinville Pepper Festival in the fall, zydeco music, hot foods, and heavy dancing are a South Louisiana tradition not to be missed.
